The room
An empty room is the hardest thing to look at.
So here is one being furnished, over an afternoon, while the light crosses the floor and hands over to a lamp. Nine pieces, and nine different ways of arriving.

- A rug is the first decision and the one that quietly sets every other. It is also the only thing here you can change on a Saturday.
- Length decides the room. Most apartments in West Amman have one wall that takes a three-seater and one that does not — worth knowing which before you sign, not after.
- Put it where you can reach it without standing up and the room works. Put it where the plan says and you will move it in a fortnight.
- Every room that gets used has a second seat that faces the first at an angle. It is the difference between a living room and a showroom.
- The one thing every buyer forgets to measure for and every owner ends up buying twice.
- Hung at eye height, which in a room with 2.9m ceilings is lower than almost everybody puts it.
- The ceiling light gets switched on twice a year. This is the one that decides what the room feels like after seven.
- Which is why it is worth asking which way the glass faces before anything else about a flat.
- Nine pieces. The shell was the same shell nine pieces ago.
